from one big “O” to another…

Greetings SmartyKat followers and Happy July!

I can’t believe that we’re already HALF WAY through another year… where does the time go? Just on that new-month-note, being the start of July and all, I have the musings / thoughts / ideas from my first ever book club read to share with you. Yay! This month the club read Robyn Okrant’s Living Oprah and well, the reviews were mixed. For those of you who haven’t heard of the book before, it’s one of those blog-as-I-go year long experiments (yes, another one), Julie & Julia style, except Okrant challenges herself to “walk the walk of the queen of talk” (Oprah) for a year – literally. By “turning to the Big Three: The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Oprah Magazine and” Okrant vows to follow “a directive of any kind [that Oprah gives] through one of these outlets.” Am I kidding? I wish.

My main qualm with the book was that there was lots of Oprah (i.e. critiques of the O empire, the show and the woman herself), however, very little of the actual living (i.e. information on how each task was completed, what a typical day in Okrant’s life was like while undergoing the challenge). Also, I was confused with what Okrant’s aim was exactly. Aside from Okrant wanting to make some money, the club and I couldn’t really see many other reasons for the experiment and, conversely, the book. For me, in the end, the book became a commentary on the media’s influence on women and because of that, I think it is – believe it or not – a valuable read for any woman. However, a word of warning, if you’re looking for an Oprah fix I’d steer well away from this book as it has a tendency to put you off the talk show queen and her feel good empire.

As for July, well, we’re moving on from one Big O to another Big OH… OH… OHHHH! The book of choice for this month is … wait for it… the Fifty Shades trilogy by E. L. James. What’s a book club without some erotic fiction? You know the drill. Read along if you like, comment if you’ve already read and / or let us know of anything else that you’re reading.

’til next naughty month. Happy reading.
